Another reason to go nuts about the upcoming Overwatch anniversary event is the addition of Petra, a new map that will go live on May 22 alongside the event.
Blizzard took the opportunity to show it off during the halftime of Saturday’s Philadelphia Fusion and Florida Mayhem bout.
What is Petra?
In the trailer, Petra features aesthetics of an old temple-like city infused with scientific tools and machinery — something that Winston might be enjoying. However, the main features of the new map include cliffs, sunken areas and long passageways that Widow mains will go gaga about. It also has a cavern that contains what looks like a large health pack.
Blizzard took inspiration from a real life location. Petra, Jordan is actually a historically rich city that has become a famous archaeological site in the country’s southwestern desert.
It will come into play as a Deathmatch map.
Prior to the announcement between last Saturday’s Overwatch League matches, Petra was already among the leaks that surfaced along with skins and other cosmetics.
In a post by Polygon, A Taiwan server suffered a bug that caused the data to leak. The alleged leaks were posted on Reddit and became an instant hot topic among fans who are more than eager to throw in some decent amount of cash of good ol’ Lootboxes.
The leaks show 11 new skins for the event, along with a bountiful of new cosmetics for the game’s newer heroes namely Doomfist, Moira and the latest support hero Brigitte.
The Overwatch Anniversary will begin May 22 up to June 11 in all platforms. Aside from the new map, the Overwatch team will bring in selected Overwatch brawls from the past events – including the limited edition skins that came along them.
So if you are planning for a grindfest with friends, the Anniversary event might be the perfect time to do so!
