Mike Chapman said that if they were ever to do a Sea of Thieves Battle Royale, they would like to put their own spin on it.
Nowadays it seems that Battle Royale is everywhere. EVERYWHERE. Let’s take Dota 2 for example. They jumped on the Battle Royale Bandwagon too and created Underhollow. Underhollow is a mix of Battle Royale and dungeon crawl, where 8 teams of three players each battle it out to receive Battle Points. If you thought that was unexpected, a Sea Of Thieves Battle Royale could be a possibility.
Rare for now has no intention to enter the territory, but if they do they would like to put their own twist on the genre. That is according to design director Mike Chapman (I wonder what the twist could be), other than having a pirate themed Naval Battle Royale. Seriously, I think that’s twisty enough). In an interview with Game Informer, he said,
“We put a Sea of Thieves spin on a familiar mechanic with new and interesting takes. We see the battle royale thing, but I think there will be opportunities to do that kind of thing differently. It’s interesting where you can take PvP in the game, but we’d want to put a unique Sea of Thieves spin on it and do something completely surprising.”
“It’s not about taking something that works super well in another game, and going, “Hey, let’s start everyone in a Sea of Thieves map from different points and have you all come together,” studio head Craig Duncan added.
Rare has heard the players in the past. Owing to player feedback, they added Skeleton Galleon in the game. Before that, all the ships in the Sea of Thieves world were controlled by other players?
So, what do you think? Would you want a Sea of Thieves Battle Royale? Would it be as fun as the current Battle Royale games?
