Turn back the clock!
Looking for an anime series to watch this season? We recommend High Score Girl to you!
A rivalry born out of a fighting game.
High Score Girl is set in the 90s, where our main character, Yaguchi Haruo, is currently getting addicted to video games. Haruo often plays them on the arcade, which was very popular back then.
The sixth grader boy has his hands always full of the classic titles that would date back to our childhood. One particular game that Haruo is fond of is the classic Street Fighter II.

One fateful day, Haruo plays with Oono Akira, a girl who belongs to the same school and class as him. This encounter revealed Akira to be on the same level as Haruo when it comes to playing arcade games. Even greater than the boy, maybe.
Akira defeats Haruo in a game of Street Fighter II for about thirty rounds. These losses aren’t the only ones, however as Haruo can’t defeat Akira in any game both of them play.
The two began to develop their friendship, born out of a casual fighting game competition.
Why should you watch ‘High Score Girl’?
The anime has already started airing a few weeks ago, and those who have already watched the first few episodes have only one thing to say: COOL.
Some (if not most) of the episodes tackle fighting game moves, covering the basics and the complicated side of arcade gaming. If you’ve been a part of the fighting game community for years now, watching High Score Girl will surely be a treat for you.
We also highly recommend this to retro gamers who just want to go on a short trip down memory lane. Can you count the gaming references in each episode of Hi Score Girl?
Summer anime High Score Girl (ハイスコアガール) is currently airing every Saturdays, 00:30 (JST).
