Arsenal player Mesut Ozil has announced that he will be forming his own FIFA esports team.
Esports has been seeing quite a lot of investment and interest from traditional sports teams from basketball, baseball and football. The European club, Paris Saint-Germain has invested in the Dora team PSG.LGD which has made it to TI8 this year. In many cases, players themselves have taken the leap. Gerrard Pique and Ronaldinho already have their own FIFA teams. The latest player to join the trend is Arsenal’s Mesut Ozil.
Ozil had recently announced his retirement from Germany and international football. And on August 2nd, he announced a recruitment drive for his very own FIFA esports team. He will work with esports Reputation, a managing company specifically for esports players.
🗣"How cheeky is that": I'm teaming up with @eSports_Rep to form my own @EASPORTSFIFA team. 💪🏼 In the upcoming weeks we'll look out for players around the world who will represent #teamozil in all major national and international EA FIFA competitions 💥👨💻👩💻 pic.twitter.com/ie25DwhBr4

Ozil was also a part of the FIFA eWorldCup in London. He featured in the trailer video of the event, and also attended the event itself. He takes a keen interest in the growing FIFA esports scene. “I have followed the EA SPORTS FIFA 18 Global Series throughout the year and I am really impressed by the performances of the Grand Finalists so far”, he had said. “I am excited to be part of their journey and look forward to welcoming them in London.
“I know that playing at a FIFA World Cup and representing your country is a highlight for all athletes and something truly unforgettable.”
The FIFA eWorld Cup boasts a prize pool of $400,000. The winner of the eWorld cup will get $250,000.
FIFA has seen a tremendous rise in popularity as an esports discipline. FIFA also has a huge casual player base, owing to the fans of football and the teams. This in turn has created a huge market for the game. The game will also be featured as a non medal sport in Asian Games 2018.
