Subscribers of Overwatch’s YouTube account were caught off-guard as the game dropped a new animated short.
Overwatch animated short ‘Shooting Star’ focuses on D.Va
The almost eight-minute clip opens with a short overview of D.Va’s achievements, as featured in a television show called Shooting Star.
Shooting Star also mentioned Busan, Overwatch’s latest control map. Is that Pachimari we see?
The short progresses with news of D.Va’s MEKA squad saving the city from the Kishin Omnic.
Shooting Star wonderfully explores Hana Song’s character especially when the world doesn’t see her as the heroic mech pilot D.Va.
In between conversational exchanges with Dae-hyun, Overwatch fans now know how committed and passionate Hana is.
The next half of the animated short has been filled with action-packed scenes as D.Va uses her mech to fight sudden omnic city-threats.
Did she get to say her classic ultimate line “Nerf this!” at the end of the battle? Watch the video to find out!
The Meka Squad
The short film revealed the other four pilots that make up the MEKA Squad. These are:
Together with D.Va, these five make up the MEKA Squad, protecting everyone from any threats from the omnics.
D.Va’s mech has an official name!
Overwatch’s senior designer for lore Michael Chu tweeted about the names of the mechs of each pilot, including D.Va.
- Casino = La Princesse Sereine
- D.Mon = Beast
- King = Singijeon
- Overlord = Master
- D.Va = Tokki
The names are presented on the side of the mechs, as seen earlier in the cinematic and on the MEKA base in the Busan map.
Singijeon is a type of Korean armory, specifically a fire arrow whereas tokki literally translates to bunny in Hangul.
What are your thoughts about this latest cinematic by Overwatch? Are we getting a new hero from the MEKA members?
